P.6 Floating Paperclip Experiment

P.6 students have learnt through the experiment why paperclips can appear to float when suspended on the surface tension of water. Surface tension is like a “skin” on the surface of water where water molecules bond together.

'Let the water rest first.' 'Don't rush! Gently place the paperclip on top of the water.' 'Ummm, will the paperclip sink or float?'
'Oh No! The paperclip sinks!' 'Try, try, try! Don't give up.' 'This time, put the tissue gently onto the water.'
'This time, put the tissue gently onto the water.' 'Now, gently place the paperclip onto the tissue paper.' 'Now, gently place the paperclip onto the tissue paper.'
'Poke the tissue paper to make it sink.' 'Poke the tissue paper to make it sink.' 'Don't sink! Don't sink!'

'Successful! Our paperclip floats. Yeah!' 'We are so happy, our hypothesis is proved!'
